PERVERSE YET STRAIGHTFORWARD. "This was a horrible experience," one member of the group chat reported, after escaping from a double chute in the fifth round. I stumbled over the mouths of that same chute without quite falling in. GRAIN got me a green A and yellow R to start. Move the R, find a consonant combination to open with: FLARE. The R was right, the other three were wrong. Feeling confident and systematic, I went with SCARY. Surely at least the S or the Y would be there. Both came up gray, as did the C. Nothing gained, just the blank holes on both sides of the AR. But the spacing was weird—still two letters missing before the A. There couldn't be an EA now, and a lot of leading consonant combinations were gone. Maybe weird spacing called for something weird to fill it. I usually tune out the existence of rare letters until an endgame gets really tight, ignoring the Z, X, and Q as I scan the options. What if it was time to drop the blinders? I still had U, which meant I could have Q, which meant QUART. After three rounds kept coming up dry, the fourth filled it the row.
