I'd probably want to look it up, but my gut / history of watching baseball tells me that you can at best count on your farm/system providing 2.... maybe 3 rotation guys. it's kind of luck as to whether those 2 or 3 are front or back end dudes but the GM's job is to go out and sign or trade for the rest of the rotation. expecting your farm system to have FIVE major league starters ready to go at the same time is lunacy.

Relatedly, I've taken to thinking of pitching prospects (TINSTAAPP) not as starters or relievers, but collectively as "pitching talent" in the minors. where they eventually slot in, even if they make the bigs, is such a hard call (and even then, the money is on "middle inning reliever").
