Long ago, when I was a child in Los Angeles, I followed the Dodgers for a couple of seasons. I quit, partly because it became clear to me that professional sports in general and major-league baseball in particular were nasty businesses dominated by nasty people. I gather it's only gotten worse since then.

Like much else about modern life, the mania for "monetizing" every available space by plastering it with ads seems unsustainable. People's attention isn't an unlimited resource. As competition for it becomes ever more frenzied, diminishing returns will set in with a vengeance.
