The Seeps Are Leaking Oil
JOE WAS SIGHTSEEING in Los Angeles on his computer, driving the streets on Google Maps, when he happened to twist up and out in the 3-D Street View and found himself looking at this:
That glowering cartoon face marks where oil and gas are seeping out of the seafloor into the Santa Barbara Channel. A bit up the coast is another black splotch, this one with an oil platform in the middle of it.
Our first guess was that we were looking at how the collateral damage of the petroleum industry has written itself onto the landscape, and thence onto the virtual landscape—but in this case, the oil spill predates the oil platform.
