BEFORE WE GET to the usual Indignity material, we have a quick request. Our longtime readers, going back to before Indignity was Indignity, will know the work of Lori Teresa Yearwood. Some of the best stories we've published through the years have been Lori's deeply reported dispatches, drawing on firsthand experience, about what it means to live as a homeless person in this country.
Lori has been working with the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, she is on a health-reporting fellowship at USC's Annenberg School of Journalism, and she is writing a memoir. In August, though, she was diagnosed with a recurrence of cancer. She is undergoing treatment right now, and she is trying to raise money to pay for her treatment and recovery expenses.
If you'd like to contribute to Lori's fundraiser, please do. And if you haven't encountered Lori's work yet, for the Indignity/Hmm family of publications or for various others, we encourage you to read it. Thank you very much.
GAMES OF SKILL AND CHANCE DEP'T.
There's a SHARP Controversy in Wordle-Land
OUT OF RESPECT for Indignity's readers who are not word-puzzle enthusiasts, we have been publishing our approximately daily Wordle Postgame Report entries directly to the web, rather than emailing them to the readership as a whole. Owing to a furious controversy over today's Wordle game, though, the Wordle Postgame Report has taken the unprecedented step of publishing a special same-day analysis of where Wordle and its proprietors at the New York Times went wrong, spoilers be damned. Outraged Wordle players, or readers who just like outrage, may find the special edition here.
SEASONAL AFFECTATION DEP'T.
What Happened to Permanent Daylight Saving Time?
I WOULD HAVE thought it was too early to worry about saving daylight but when the alarm goes off now it’s still nighttime. Technically it's just about when "civil twilight" takes over from "nautical twilight," but we’re not at sea. We’re on land, with the horizon behind the buildings and the sun below the horizon. I raise the blinds in the younger boy’s room just for the sound and the gesture of it, a little act of duty and betrayal from one non-morning person to another. Neither of us likes it but we have to be on the subway by 7:30.
I remembered, or believed I remembered, that Congress had done something about Standard Time earlier this year. Didn't they decree eternal Daylight Time, by federal law? No more falling back, no more springing forward? What a huge thing for everyone to have talked about, and then to have stopped talking about, even as the planet kept on spinning on its axis and revolving around the sun.
